Recommended Reolink camera setup for reliable home security

Three wall cameras, a doorbell, local recording · Last updated June 2025

If you want a dependable home security system without professional installation or a monthly fee, Reolink makes equipment that covers a lot of ground for the money. This is the setup I run: it balances performance, flexibility, and cost, and it has held up in daily use.

Cameras

Solar-powered wall-mount cameras — $79.99 each

These wireless cameras are a good fit for exterior coverage. Each unit includes a 3W solar panel, so it keeps itself charged without any wiring to the house. Mount them on exterior walls to watch entrances, the driveway, the backyard, or the sides of the property.

Motion detection and night vision cover the hours that matter. If the battery does not last overnight in the middle of winter, the fix is usually a larger solar panel rather than a new camera.

Placement tip: put the panel somewhere with consistent sun — ideally south-facing — and check the charge level after the first week.

Reolink video doorbell — $87.97

There are two versions, and the difference matters more than the color:

  • Black: horizontal wide angle — better for watching the front yard and street.
  • White: vertical wide angle — better for the stoop and spotting packages.

For most houses the black horizontal model is the better choice, because it covers more of what happens before someone reaches the door.

Storage

Storage hub — $99.99

The hub is optional, but it centralizes recording and keeps footage even if a camera is damaged or taken. If you use it, add a drive:

If you skip the hub, each camera needs its own microSD card ($16.49 each). Cards work fine, but the footage lives on the camera — if the camera walks off, so does the recording.

Cost breakdown

Item Qty Cost
Solar wall-mount cameras 3 $239.97
Video doorbell (black) 1 $87.97
Storage hub 1 $99.99
Drive for hub 1 $22.99
Total — with hub 4 $450.92
4 × microSD cards (instead of hub and drive) 4 $65.96
Total — with cards 4 $393.90

Final thoughts

This setup gives solid coverage, room to grow, and very little ongoing cost. Solar power means no wiring, motion alerts mean you are not reviewing hours of nothing, and local recording means the footage stays under your control. No subscription required.
